Perhaps this has already been done, but I’d be curious to know the results of an in-depth survey about why, exactly, it is that many people go to yoga classes. I can think of many reasons off the top of my head — such as: community, connection, ecstatic experiences — or at least sweaty ones, exercise, detoxification, body awareness, health, calm, peace, etc. etc. — not to mention the supposedly-desired ‘yoga-butt’ that has been written up in countless columns. And yet…I still wonder, what’s beneath the beneath? If I kept asking “Why?” to each answer that was given, what would be the reason for the reason? i.e., why peace? why calm? why detoxification? I’m not sure exactly where this would lead, but it might be yield some answers the students themselves weren’t even aware of initially. Thoughts? Why do you practice? And why is that reason reason enough? I am going somewhere with this…so it’s more of a leading question that I’m letting on. More later.
